All About Joe
Joseph Jerome is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Tampa and a Tech & Public Policy Visiting Fellow at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy. In these roles, he:
- • Lectured on topics including the First Amendment, defamation law, Section 230 and Internet regulation, advertising rules and intellectual property.
- • Taught lessons on grade inflation, ethical theory, propaganda, and digital ethics generally.
- • Organized discussions on spatial computing, the “TikTok ban,” and national privacy rules.
Joe works at the intersection of law and technology and has written about emerging technologies and data policy and regulation. Most recently, he has written and spoken about policy challenges presented by spatially-aware technologies, portability in digital avatars, and prospects for enacting a federal privacy law.
Recent Professional Roles
Joe was previously a policy manager at Meta Reality Labs, where he served as policy lead on sensor technologies for VR headsets and AR glasses. Before that, he worked on state advocacy efforts at the Center for Democracy & Technology and Common Sense Media. He was also policy counsel at the Future of Privacy Forum and an associate in the privacy and cybersecurity practice at WilmerHale.
Education
Joe has a J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he was an International Law and Human Rights Student Fellow. He served as managing editor for the NYU Journal of Law & Liberty and The Commentator: NYU Law’s Student Newspaper. He was a legal assistant to Professor Shinya Murase at the United Nation’s International Law Commission.
He graduated summa cum laude with a B.A., Independent Concentration in Western Political History, from Boston University. His senior thesis, Ancient Rome and the Barbarians: A Superpower’s Pacification Dilemma, contextualized the early stages of the War on Terror with Rome’s wars against Germanic tribes. He received the Polytropos Award and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
